Christine Birkel-Ryynänen spoke with Visit Finland about travel safety

Christine Birkel-Ryynänen interviewed Jyrki Oksanen, Head of Visit Finland (DACH & Benelux), for Nordis Magazin / skandinavien.de to answer the question: “How safe is Finland as a travel destination?” The full interview with seven questions is available online. A shorter version with five questions will appear in the Nordis print magazine in early summer 2026 in the “5 Fragen an…” section.

The interview shows how Finland combines a peaceful natural environment, lively cities, and friendly communities. Finland is well known in Europe for its safety. Oksanen said that even with a 1,400 km border with Russia, visitors can feel safe. Authorities maintain public security through careful planning, strong public order, and NATO membership. Travelers are welcome throughout the country.

The interview covers useful topics for travelers, including safe, tasty food, options for people with allergies, and a welcoming atmosphere for solo travelers and LGBTQ+ guests. Oksanen encouraged everyone to explore both the cities and the peaceful countryside. He noted that Finland’s openness, calm, and freedom for self-expression often surprise and please visitors.

This interview gives an expert’s perspective on how Finland balances its wild nature with daily safety, helping travelers plan their trips with confidence.

Update: Following the interview, Jyrki Oksanen noted that the story received widespread praise at ITB Berlin, highlighting the positive reception of the insights shared about Finland as a travel destination.
